Frontiers Retreat Brussels, October 2023

The fourth edition of the ESACT Frontiers Retreat is taking place 18th to 21st October 2023 in Brussels.

These meetings are dedicated to Early Career Scientists (ECSs) working in the advancing cell technology and related fields. We aim to continue engaging the next generation of ESACT scientists and to encourage those who have not attended previous ESACT meetings to actively participate in this community.

Frontiers Retreats are not classical meetings: they are built on a range of sessions focussed on career and personal development, stimulation of alternative thinking emerging from interaction with peers across a broad range of subject areas and level of experience, and promoting active networking among all participants. They also aim to stimulate scientific discussions and help to bridge the gap between industry and academia.

The Scientific Sessions are an amazing opportunity for ECSs to present their work, with most of the oral presentation slots being reserved for the ECSs selected from the high-quality abstracts submitted. There are also two very engaging poster sessions and there are prizes for both the best oral presentation and the best poster presentation.

The Career and Personal Development Sessions will help you to develop transferrable skills and extend your professional network. Few things are as important for an ECS: take this opportunity build upon your skills and network!

This meeting is open to the entire community, including non-ESACT members.

So, submit your abstract and save the date: 18th – 21st of October 2023.

Exciting opportunity within the BioPharmaceutical Development (BPD) department at AstraZeneca.

The BPD department, which focuses on creating novel products that fight disease and transform quality of life, has a two-year Rotational Associate Programme that consists ofthree eight-month rotational assignments across various BPD functions.
The programme enables recent graduates to make a difference by working on challenging technical projects supporting the development of protein therapeutics in the areas of Cell Culture and Fermentation, Purification, Analytics and Protein Characterisation, Formulation, Delivery Devices, Clinical Logistics and Manufacturing.
The programme is designed to equip participants with an understanding of each BPD function’s role in the drug development process, enable them to grow professionally and ensures a full-time position in BPD at the end of all three rotations.

They are looking for scientists with a focus on biology, chemistry, biochemistry, engineering or related discipline (Bachelors and/or Master graduates with 0-2 years prior work experience).

Individuals should have strong academic performance, strong technical and lab skills, be critical thinkers, have good communication skills and a collaborative working style. Candidates should have a passion for science and a strong interest in a career in drug development.

Applications will be accepted from 22nd August for a start in 2024 f 2024. Applications for the programme will close in the UK on 8th October 2023.

Bioprocessing Entrepreneurial Skills Training (BEST) Programme – September 3rd – 8th 2023, Durham

Do you want to find out how your career might develop working for industry, the differences between industrial- and academic-driven research and how the industrial environment matches your career ambitions?
Have you ever thought of developing your ideas into commercial outcome and impact? Here’s your opportunity to answer these questions and find out much more about your ability to work in teams and how the innovative, entrepreneurial spirit drives research translation.

Sessions form part of an integrated package that culminates in a Dragons’ Den-type pitch to establish a novel business concept:
Talks on molecular design for developing, manufacturing and delivering biological therapeutics and the societal/economic considerations for new therapeutics
Tutoring on the tools needed for self-awareness when working with others, career development and the entrepreneurial process
Visits to industrial sites (Centre for Process Innovation, FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, GlaxoSmithKline) coupled with presentations from, and discussions with, industrial scientists.
